What is Ayurveda

by Jaskiran Brar

Ayurveda, which literally means the knowledge and wisdom of life, often called the mother of all healings. Ayurveda, the original holistic system of health and rejuvenation, originated 10,000 years ago in the ancient Sanskrit Vedas of India, and is still practiced there today. The Ayurveda views the mind and body as a microcosm of our environment and intimately connected to its rhythms. Ayurveda uses a theory of the five great elements; ether, air, fire, water and earth, to describe principles of how nature functions and therefore to understand our own true nature. Ayurveda maintains that we are an intimate reflection of everything in the universe; we are all composed of these five elements. In the human being, these five elemental energies refine into three essential governing principles known as “doshas.” The doshas represent three sets of physical traits and mental tendencies that combine at conception to form the foundation of our unique nature. Through this understanding, one can successfully maintain a state of health and restore vitality when it has been lost. Actions in harmony with our inner nature create health, while those inharmonious create disease.

The body heals itself. The Ayurvedic system works to correct the underlying imbalances or root cause that block the body's own natural healing processes, when that is removed health is restored.. This healing system treats the whole person and not just the symptoms.

Ayurveda assists us to journeying back to optimal health by balancing the five element in the body and mind through the lifestyle udjustments, herbs, diet, yoga and meditation. Ayurveda helps nourish our bodies while calming our mind from the stresses of modern daily life.
