HOW THE SUN DAMAGES YOUR SKIN

by Jaskiran Brar

Protection from environmental conditions is necessary to prevent skin irritation, damage, and moisture loss. The sun’s damaging effects include burning, blistering, premature wrinkling, and skin cancer. In the early stage, sun damage manifests itself as subtle surface change, such as dryness, discoloration and scaly spots. As sun exposure continues to accumulate, the damage turn into deeper lines, uneven surface color and texture, and loss of firmness and elasticity.

UNEVEN COLOR
  • As a means of protecting itself from sun, the body produces excess melanin, which over time can cause uneven skin color. Even though darker skin has more natural protection against the sun, it still prone to damage. Using sun-senstive chemicals( beta-hydroxy, retinol(vitamin A)on skin that is constantly exposed to the sun can cause a reddish-brown pigmentation to occur on the cheeks and neck.
WRINKLES
  • When the sun damages skin, it weaken elastin and collagen, in turn causing deep wrinkles, and sagging and loose skin
AGE SPOTS
  • Commonly found on the forehead, age spots tend to be flat but dark. They can also appear on the face, hands, arms and back
THE LIPS
  • The lips are sensitive to the sun and can develop freckles and dark spots over time.
PROTECT YOURSELF
  • According to the American Cancer society, one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime.
  • Beyond daily use and proper application of sunscreen, its essential to take other steps to protect yourself from too much sun exposure, such as limiting outdoor activities between 10 am and 2 pm wearing a wide rimmed hat and covering up whenever possible
